Blaise’s October Recommendation

ZeitounZeitoun by Dave Eggers

“I just started listening to this on audio a few days ago and am only on disc 2 but I am really enjoying it so far.  It’s a non-fiction story that follows the Zeitoun family, who run a successful painting and contracting business in New Orleans, during Hurricane Katrina.  I like Egger’s straightforward prose and the reader is excellent.  I feel like I am just listening to a friend tell a story.”

Sue also recommends this title: “Zeitoun by Dave Eggers is my recommendation.  Eggers tells the real-life story of Abdulrahmin Zeitoun, a middle aged Syrian-American businessman and father of four who stays behind to watch his properties in New Orleans when his wife and children flee the city in the wake of hurricane Katrina. Zeitoun rides out the storm, and after the levies break, paddles around a flooded New Orleans for a week in his canoe rescuing elderly from their ravaged homes and trying to get law enforcement officers to help the stranded citizens that he cannot evacuate.  It is both chilling and surreal when he is mistaken for a terrorist and locked away for weeks without any due process while his frantic wife and extended family try to track him down.”
