Moby-Duck: The True Story of 28,800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea and of the Beachcombers, Oceanographers, Environmentalists, and Fools, Including the Author, Who Went in Search of Them by Donovan Hohn

moby duck“I was curious about what really happened to the toys after reading Eric Carle’s picture book, 10 Rubber Ducks.  It’s a fascinating story and Hohn’s narrative style is engaging. People all over the world (including kids!) helped to track the course of the toys, which over the course of 15 years landed in Alaska, Australia, South America, England, and North America. They traveled through the Arctic Circle to reach the Atlantic Ocean, a journey of over 17,000 miles.

I haven’t yet read Flotsametrics by Curtis Ebbesmeyer, but the subtitle, How One Man’s Obsession With Runaway Sneakers and Rubber Ducks Revolutionized Ocean Science, shows how far-reaching the effects of the toys washed off a container ship in a storm were.” – Ellen
