Mary Ann’s January Recommendation

Havisham by Ronald Frame

havishamFrame imagines the back-story of one of Charles Dickens’s most fascinating characters – Miss Havisham of Great Expectations.  In this story, her mother dies at her birth.  Her father makes plans to train her to be a lady, but also gives her a fine education in traditional subjects and in the running of his prosperous brewery. The usual Victorian class and gender issues arise. Estella, Pip, and her dastardly fiancé are here, but the focus is on Miss Havisham’s and her determination to control her own life.  – Mary Ann
