Rebecca’s March Recommendation

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

“The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.”

“The circus is called Le Cirque des Reves, it is only open at night, and the circus itself is entirely black and white.  The acts inside the circus are breathtaking, enchanting, and miraculous, where impossible feats take place every day.  But the circus holds a deeper purpose–it is a venue for a secret duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood by their magical instructors expressly for this purpose.  This is a duel in which, unbeknownst to the two characters, only one person can be left standing.  Celia and Marco’s competition rests on the use of imagination, creativity, and will, in which each character uses the circus to showcase their abilities.  Written in rich and detailed prose, this debut novel by Morgenstern depicts a devastating love story and truly makes the reader believe in magic.  This novel would be appealing both for lovers of literary fiction, fantasy fiction, and is a great young adult crossover”.
