Rebecca’s October Recommendation

Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl

“This first novel by author Marisha Pessl is a combination murder mystery and eccentric coming-of-age story.  Told in the first person by 16-year-old Blue van Meer, Blue recounts her involvement with mysterious film studies teacher Hannah Schneider and a group of high school royalty termed “the bluebloods”.  Blue has been raised by her eccentric and intellectual father since the death of her mother when she was six, and the book is filled with literary allusions and random facts conjured up from Blue’s endless knowledge of all things intellectual.  This is an intricately plotted and leisurely paced murder mystery, but it is Blue’s character and her individual journey into self-awareness that will keep you reading to the end.  This is also a great YA crossover.”
