Mary Ann’s July Recommendation

Alpha Better Juice, or the Joy of Text by Roy Blount Jr.

“A follow up to Alpha Bits, Roy Blunt Jr. continues to examine the amazing etymologies and usage of  English/American words.  He’s found  more “sonicky” words.  Blount made up “sonicky”  to apply to words whose pronunciations evoke sound and body movement – like “slush” and “eel”  and “fuss.”  He’ll surprise with entries that interest him like  “Eddie Haskell” and “Google-logisms.”  References come from a variety of sources – newspapers,, the Oxford English Dictionary and more.  The entertaining  entries range from a paragraph to a few pages, so it’s perfect for reading in short spurts.
