Mary Ann’s June Recommendation

The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett

“A brief, entertaining book in a high-class, British style.  Queen Elizabeth discovers the wonders of reading thanks to a library bookmobile.  Lots of references to famous books.

If you like it, try The Clothes They Stood Up In  also by Bennett about a bizarre burglary in which everything in a flat is taken– even forks, pencils,  and toilet paper.  It has curious effects on a London  couple as they  try to  find out why it happened.

Both books are breezy, witty and funny.  The author is a playwright, so the dialogue is delightful.

  1. I loved this book! I will have to check out The Clothes They Stood Up In as well, and I didn’t know Bennett was a playwright- thanks for the info Mary Ann!
