Margaret’s July Recommendation

Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta

“This is a really compelling teen fantasy read by one of my favorite authors who writes for teens.  This is Marchetta’s first fantasy title, and she does a fabulous job of creating complex characters and a fascinating world.   Many of the citizens of Lumatere fled their city when the royal family was assassinated, and a curse was put over the country to keep those who had left from returning.  The story follows Finnikin as he must decide whether or not to return to Lumatere to try to break the curse or if he should rebuild elsewhere. While reading Finnikin of the Rock is an escape to another world, many of conflicts and struggles that the characters face are not far removed from our own experiences.  Marchetta explores themes of family, loyalty, and exile.  It’s also a real fun page-turner!”
