Mary Ann’s July Recommendation

JacketThe Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

“Antioch’s High School put it  on a summer reading list for incoming freshman. Parents objected, calling it vulgar and racist.  The English Dept. calls it positive and life-affirming.  What do you think?
The book won the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and was named one of the Los Angeles Times’ Favorite Children’s Books of 2007 and New York Times’ Notable Children’s Books of 2007. This book is also currently on the reading list for incoming freshman at OPRF High school.”

  1. I loved this book (in fact it was going to be my July recommendation, but Mary Ann beat me to it! If you enjoy this, you might also like Alexie’s “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven”, a collection of stories that was the basis for the movie “Smoke Signals”.
